Pakistan: Accident in marble mine, 12 dead and 25 injured

At least 10 people have died and about 30 people have been trapped after a stone slid into a marble mine in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Officials said the disaster management official told the Express Tribune that rescue teams have so far recovered nine bodies and injured five people. The event is Saturday afternoon. More than 12 people have died in Pakistan, the search is still on, deaths were due to the slipping of stones.

Dozens of workers were mining the marble when a heavy rock fell down, forcing the workers beneath it. The stone slide also destroyed dozens of vehicles, including trucks, excavators, tractors and other heavy machinery.

The Express Tribune quoted a witness as saying that the mine started collapsing when it was blasted for breaking the mountain. The doctor confirmed that four of the five injured are in critical condition while one has received minor injuries.

Four seriously injured people were referred to a hospital in Peshawar. The local administration has imposed an emergency in the mining sector and the sites will remain closed until further orders. An administration official said the operation was on to evacuate the stranded people.
