‘Do What We Can’: U.S. Official Promises Assistance for Afghans

As the United States’ involvement in the war in Afghanistan comes to a close, a U.S. official provided an update on flights of refugees from Kabul to the United States.

I’m pleased to report that the first flight of Operation Allies Refuge that departed Kabul yesterday landed in the United States nearly three hours ago. Our Afghan partners and their families on that flight will arrive later this morning, East Coast time, at Fort Lee, Va. For months, we and our colleagues in Washington have worked to speed up everything we could in the S.I.V. process. Since the first of this year, our consular staff in Kabul has issued over 5,000 special immigrant visas and interviewed thousands more. I’ve met repeatedly over the course of the last 10 days with the president, with Dr. Abdullah, the defense minister and others to do what we can to provide assistance and support. And I, of course, would also note the U.S. military has been engaged in a limited way, but in a significant one that has impact in meeting our obligations to defend Afghan forces when they are under attack.
