Why the World Must Save Itself from the Wrath of Climate Change

Why the World Must Save Itself from the Wrath of Climate Change: As we all know, the world has been getting warmer for a long time now. Scientists and world leaders have repeatedly held historic summits to discuss the effects and possible solutions to global warming since 2015 but have not yet succeeded to wean off the use of fossil fuels, which are the major cause of the global warming effect. This is because the shift would possibly restructure the world economy and this is against the interests of many parties. The world now stands on the verge of a climate catastrophe.

Why the World Must Save Itself from the Wrath of Climate Change

What really is global warming? Why it happening and what is are the possible solutions? This write-up will provide brief information on it. In case you required more information, you can look it up at Wikipedia, or if you are a student with an assignment, you can check out this website that assists students complete essays on such topics.

What is the problem?

Due to the warming effect of carbon emissions from the fuel that we use, the ozone layer is getting depleted. The ozone layer essentially has a shielding effect on the earth from direct rays from the sun. Hence, due to its gradual depletion, the world’s temperatures have averagely increased by 0.85 degrees Celsius in the last 100 years. Of the fourteen warmest years, 13 were recorded in the 21st century. 2015 goes on record to be the warmest year to ever be experienced.

How and why is this happening?

Scientists have explained that the gases released from agricultural activities, manufacturing, household and transport activities add up to the naturally existing greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is the way that the atmosphere traps energy from the sun. In more detail, human activities like burning coal, natural gas and oil releases carbon dioxide which is the major gas responsible for global warming.

The other human activity actively contributing to global warming is the cutting down of forests. It is common knowledge that trees absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus cutting them down leaves an abundance of the gas in the air.

What are the effects?

The most conspicuous effect is the melting of glaciers and the arctic sea. This brings about a rise in the sea levels which shifts the natural balance between land and sea on the earth which may have adverse effects on the world’s regions. The sea levels have risen by 19m globally since 1900. This has been brought about by the retreat of polar ice sheets. Significant temperature rise is another effect that is already being felt around the world accompanied by changes in climatic patterns.

What should we expect in the future?

The temperatures would probably keep getting higher. The world will experience more extreme weather conditions. The magnitude of the changes is still uncertain as scientists are still trying to counter global warming. What is obvious is that there will likely be a shortage of fresh water and the conditions of food production will definitely be affected by the weather pattern changes. The world will be more prone to floods, heat waves, drought and other adverse climatic conditions.

What can be done?

Countries should continue working together to develop plans that help curb greenhouse gas emissions with each of them developing policies on the use of carbon based fuels in their individual countries. There should be strict rules against deforestation and institutions and organizations all over should encourage tree-planting activities in attempts to restore the world’s forests.

We as individuals should do our best to avoid machinery that emits greenhouse gases and encourage the innovation of methods of carbon extraction from the atmosphere like the recently discovered procedure of production of graphite by extraction of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
