U.N. Rights Council to Investigate Israeli-Palestinian Violence
“According to figures verified by my office, 242 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli security forces, the I.S.F., in strikes on Gaza, including 63 children. Thousands of others have been injured, while it is estimated that over 74,000 Palestinian has been displaced.” “Germany holds strong reservations. The Human Rights Council has an important role dealing with acute crisis and related human rights violations. The present resolution, however, does not address the recent escalation and omits any context. Instead, it would mandate a commission of inquiry that stretches indefinitely into the future and the past.” “Hamas fired rockets indiscriminately, targeting civilians, to kill as many innocent people as possible. Israel takes all steps to adhere to the principle of distinction, proportionality and necessity. We do so not only because of our obligation under the law of armed conflict, but also it is our moral duty to protect innocent lives.” “The results of the recorded votes are as follows: 24 in favor, nine against, 14 abstentions. Draft resolution A/HRC/S30/L1, entitled Ensuring Respect for International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Including East Jerusalem and in Israel, as orally revised, is therefore adopted.
