Will Tokyo really host a pandemic Olympics? | News

Image
When Tokyo’s bid to host the Olympics succeeded eight years ago, a supportive public expected the 2020 Games to be a moment of national unity – and, after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, a declaration that the country was open for business. Instead, the coronavirus pandemic forced a delay to 2021. With the rearranged Games due to take place in less than two months the expected respite from the pandemic has not materialised, and with vaccination rates in Japan stubbornly low, polls suggest that as much as 80% of the public wants to see them postponed again or even called off. Justin McCurry , the Guardian’s Tokyo correspondent, tells Anushka Asthana why the movement to cancel the Games is facing an uphill battle in the face of vast financial pressure to go ahead. Tesla’s vehicle price gains due to supply chain pressure: Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk attends an opening ceremony for Tesla China-made Model Y program in Shanghai, east China, Jan. 7, 2020. Ding Ting | Xinhua News Agency | Getty Images The price of Tesla vehicles is increasing due to supply chain pressures across the auto industry, particularly for raw materials, Elon Musk said on Monday in response to a tweet. “Prices increasing due to major supply chain price pressure industry-wide. Raw materials especially,” Musk said in a tweet. He was responding to an unverified Twitter account called @Ryanth3nerd, which said, “I really don’t like the direction @tesla is going raising prices of vehicles but removing features like lumbar for the Model Y…” In May, Tesla increased its Model 3 and Model Y prices, the automaker’s fifth incremental price increase for its vehicles in just a few months, the Electrek website reported. During an earnings conference call in April, Musk said Tesla had experienced “some of the ...

Fighting doesn’t fascinate Khabib Nurmagomedov anymore. The former UFC Lightweight Champion said he has moved on from the fight game and wouldn’t come out of retirement just to make his promotion, Eagle Fighting Championship (EFC), more popular. Speaking to reporters at the recently concluded EFC 36, Khabib Nurmagomedov was asked about his chances of competing in a potential grappling match. The Dagestani replied: “Not interested at all. Why do I need to grapple someone? I’m tired of, as they say, diving for sweaty legs. We grapple in training. Shamil knows, Khasbulaev knows. But to fight in an arena to prove… I don’t even know what to prove. Why do I need to come out (of retirement)? I’m not interested in self-affirmation or money” (Transcription courtesy: RT Sport MMA) When a reporter asked if he would be willing to compete in a grappling match to increase EFC’s popularity, Khabib Nurmagomedov said the idea sounds fascinating but he would still prefer to stay on the sidelines....

A Giant Tortoise Thought Extinct For Over 100 Years Has Been Found in Galapagos

A giant tortoise in the Galápagos Islands that was thought to have gone extinct over a century ago just came out of hiding. Researchers discovered the female tortoise on the Galápagos’ Fernandina Island during a joint expedition carried out by the Galápagos National Park Directorate and the Galápagos Conservancy in 2019, according to a statement.   They nicknamed her “Fernanda”. At the time, the team “was confident” that the lone tortoise was the “lost” Fernandina Giant Tortoise ( Chelonoidis phantasticus ), a species native to the island that was thought extinct for 112 years due to eruptions of the Fernandina Volcano, according to the statement. But to confirm, they sent blood samples to geneticists at Yale University. We healthcare workers steel ourselves for a battle we hope does not return to Victoria’s hospitals | Stephen Parnis

Lockdown. The word triggers anxiety among millions of Victorians, and with good reason. We endured 112 days of it last winter, when we stared down our second wave. In that time, thousands were infected by Covid, and hundreds died. While we became the only place in the world to successfully turn such a major outbreak into community elimination, the scars remain. After months of relative freedom, where news of the pandemic was largely restricted to international news feeds, the last few days have hit Melbourne hard. Community cases – the first here in almost three months – originated from a breach in South Australian hotel quarantine, and we are now paying the price: hundreds of exposure sites, thousands of close contacts and back into lockdown. We have been here before. Victorians know the drill, but that does not make it any easier. Some things make coping harder, like the bitter knowledge that so much of this was preventable. For many months, my medical colleagues and I have wa...

China’s Beidou gains market share, challenges U.S.’ GPS

China is set to become a major player in the “highly lucrative” satellite navigation market, as it seeks to compete with the U.S. government-owned Global Positioning System (GPS), an analyst said Monday. But China’s homegrown Beidou system is not likely to overtake the GPS system for now, said Craig Singleton, adjunct fellow at the hawkish Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “China has marked a major step in its race to increase market share in this highly lucrative sector,” Singleton told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia.” “The completion of the system also reaffirms China’s status as a world power. It represents a major declaration about its technical independence from the West, which carries wide-ranging geopolitical implications,” said Singleton. We Finally Have a Simple System For Naming All The Concerning COVID-19 Variants

COVID-19 variants are to be known by letters of the Greek alphabet to avoid stigmatizing nations where they were first detected, the World Health Organization announced Monday.   The new system applies to variants of concern – the most troubling of which four are in circulation – and the second-level variants of interest being tracked. “They will not replace existing scientific names, but are aimed to help in public discussion,” said Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s COVID-19 technical lead. Under the new system, the variants of concern take on the following names: the hitherto so-called British variant B.1.1.7 becomes Alpha ; the B.1.351 first discovered in South Africa becomes Beta , while the Brazilian P.1 becomes Gamma . The so-called Indian variant B.1.617 is split into sub-lineages, of which the B.1.617.2 variant of concern becomes Delta . The B.1.617.1 variant of interest is called Kappa . Besides these names, there are two other scientific names in use for each mutatio...

Richard Colbeck admits not knowing how many aged care workers have been vaccinated | Aged care (Australia)

Image
The aged care minister Richard Colbeck has admitted he doesn’t know how many workers in the aged care sector have been vaccinated, but says he’s comfortable with the pace of the rollout despite the fresh Covid outbreak in Melbourne. The Morrison government is under intensifying pressure after two aged care workers and a resident tested positive to Covid-19, laying bare the persistent vulnerabilities in a sector Canberra funds and regulates. During the first wave of the pandemic last year, more than 600 people died in Australia in residential aged care. The government has said previously aged care residents would be vaccinated by March. Officials for the Department of Health told a Senate estimates hearing on Tuesday that 44,333 aged care residents had received a vaccination, and of that cohort, 25,319 had received their second dose. Colbeck told the ABC on Tuesday he didn’t know how many workers had been vaccinated because the government did not have consolidated data. “I’m not g...

Will the Specialist Bonus stay in Call of Duty: Warzone?

Image
One of Warzone’s most elusive and popular inclusions into Verdansk 1984 is the Nakatomi Plaza building from the action film Die Hard, and understandably so considering the contents of its vault. The crown jewel of Nakatomi’s vault is undoubtedly the Specialist Bonus, a pickup that converts the player into a one-man army. The Specialist Bonus allows players to accrue perks as they kill opponents in the Warzone, as opposed to normally obtaining killstreaks. While missing out on killstreaks can be inconvenient, the Specialist Bonus is largely considered more beneficial as it can turn a Warzone player into a super soldier as long as they rack up the kills. But is it here for good? COD Warzone: What we know about the Specialist Bonus’ availability Image via Activision Having been introduced as part of the Nakatomi Plaza inclusion, it’s likely that the Specialist Bonus will be departing Warzone when the plaza does on June 15th. However, Activision has indicated that the curre...

Federal court rejects challenge to Australia’s outbound travel ban | Law (Australia)

The rightwing thinktank Libertyworks has lost its federal court challenge to Australia’s outbound travel ban. On Tuesday the full federal court unanimously rejected Libertyworks’ bid to overturn the Covid-19 restriction, which had argued that the health minister, Greg Hunt, has no power to impose a blanket rule stopping citizens from leaving the country. Justices Anna Katzmann, Michael Wigney and Thomas Thawley dismissed the application and ordered Libertyworks to pay the commonwealth’s costs. The federal government had argued that, if successful, the case would have “driven a truck” through Hunt’s powers under the Biosecurity Act to impose measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 during the global pandemic. The case is the fourth failed challenge to Australia’s coronavirus restrictions, after Clive Palmer’s failure to overturn Western Australia’s travel ban, a high court decision upholding the validity of Victoria’s second wave lockdown, and the federal court rejecting a bid to...

Glum to Gleeful, Israeli Media React to Possible End of Netanyahu Era

Haaretz Haaretz is the most prominent daily paper in Israel that is associated with the left. “Netanyahu, if he leaves the Prime Minister’s Office, will go into the opposition and make this government’s life hell. His supporters will follow him and won’t hesitate to use any word, curse or form of protest. The rising incitement against Bennett and Shaked, who have been called ‘corrupt,’ ‘swindlers’ and ‘traitors’ are a pale promo of what’s to come,” wrote Ravit Hecht, a columnist for Haaretz, referring to Ayelet Shaked, a close ally of Mr. Bennett’s. (Mr. Netanyahu would remain in Parliament, unless he resigns his seat.) “The Bibi-ists won’t abandon Netanyahu,” she added, speaking of Mr. Netanyahu’s most loyal supporters. “Addicted to feelings of inferiority, fantasies of persecution, to blood libels with little basis in reality and especially to speculation and conspiracy theories, they will not accept a regime change that was achieved as a result of a democratic election. They wi...
