The story of Sonic.exe starts in the year 2011. When a web user by the name JC the Hyena” has posted a short story to the Creepypasta Wiki. That described a disturbing and violent Sonic game to his friend who is supposedly mailed him. It came with a warning that he should not play it.

But he does and the game quickly becomes acutely distressing:

The first thing I noticed that was out of place and was when I pressed to start. There was a break second when I saw the title image which is turned into something much different. Something that I now consider horrifying and before cutting to black.

I remember what the image looked like in that brak second before the game cut to black. The sky had darkened, the title symbolic object was rusted and ruined. The SEGA 1991 was now called SEGA 666. The water had turned in red, like blood. Except it looked hyper-realistic.

At the end of the story, the author turns to find a Sonic plush toy staring at him from his bed and the blood coming from its eyes.

The combination of “Sonic the Hedgehog” and a frightening story was too much for the internet to resist. Soon it began to find an audience. It inspired the hundreds of animations of the demonic Sonic on DeviantArt. It is a place that is certainly no stranger to weird Sonic fan art.

When a user named “MY5TCrimson” that is released a playable game version of Sonic.exe on the indie-game developer site called GameJolt. It is designed exactly as the story described it. A few months later, YouTube’s most popular vlogger, PewDiePie, has uploaded a tour video of MY5TCrimson’s game. Introducing the creepypasta to the millions of people.

As with anything that becomes more popular, political development was unavoidable.

That is where this story takes a tragically causing laughter turn. In the year January 2014, only a few months after Sonic.exe’s PewDiePie introduction. The post was restored and now Sonic.exe continues to live on both as the playable game version on GameJolt. As a cautionary tale about not letting on the internet fame that will get to the head.
